Russell Lehmann’s Book Reveals What It is Like to Live With Autism
“Inside Out” sheds light on the challenges that a person with autism has to go through
RENO, Nev. – According to data found in autism-society.org, about 1 to 1.5 million Americans live with an autism spectrum disorder. This disorder can come with associated impairments that can affect several aspects of the patient’s life and even the people around them. Russell Lehmann has high-functioning autism and he shares a firsthand account of what it is like to live with this disorder in his book, Inside Out. This collection of poignant stories and poems sheds light on the challenges that a person with autism and his family have to go through.
Lehmann was diagnosed with autism when he was 12. His life has been riddled with depression, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), severe anxiety and an eating disorder. This book is a courageous attempt at capturing Lehmann’s unique perception of the world and then releasing it in a series of eye-opening narratives and poetry.
The stories are sorted chronologically and encompass many significant things that happened to the author. He intersperses the chapters with poetry that reveal a more personal and emotional side to the events that unfold. The poems explore a diverse range of themes, as colorful as Lehmann’s life, such as Darfur, Mother Nature, the afterlife and mythology. Of course, there are also more personal and emotive poetic pieces that reveal the depths of his heart and soul. Poignant and inspirational, Inside Out gives voice to people who have autism. The personal recollections and revelations make this an exceptional and eye-opening book.
